Camunda 8 connector manual: inbound webhooks and correlation
Receive external events safely, start processes or correlate messages, and handle duplicates.

Prepared on 20 Oct 2026 for editorial review. Product specifications and company research results are not asserted unless verified.
1. Decide how an event enters the process
A start-event integration creates a new process instance; a message catch event can continue an existing waiting instance. Choose the event behaviour before configuring a connector, and define the external event ID and the business key used to associate it with a request.
2. Configure the inbound connector
Apply the supported inbound webhook connector template to the appropriate BPMN event. Configure the endpoint identifier, authentication and payload mapping using the documentation for your deployment. For message correlation, align the message name and correlation key with the waiting process.
Keep credentials in the supported secret store. Check network access, ingress and TLS for your environment, and do not assume that knowing an endpoint URL is sufficient authentication.
3. Deploy and send a test event
Deploy to the sandbox, then obtain the actual webhook endpoint through your environment’s supported interface. Send a small authorised test payload from your API testing tool. Verify that the correct process starts or the intended waiting instance resumes, and inspect the mapped variables in Operate.
4. Protect against duplicate delivery
External systems may retry events. Keep a stable event ID and design deduplication or idempotent business processing. Test repeated payloads, malformed input and events that have no matching waiting instance; agree reconciliation and retention with the integration owner.
5. Document the endpoint lifecycle
Record who owns the sender, credentials and process deployment. Review endpoint behaviour across redeployments, secret rotation and connector runtime changes. Non-webhook inbound connectors may subscribe or poll rather than expose an HTTP endpoint; follow the specific connector manual.
