Define what understanding means

Document understanding can include recognizing text, interpreting layout and extracting fields into a structured record. These are related but distinct tasks. Begin with clear definitions of the required fields, expected document types and the consequences of an incorrect extraction.

Build a representative dataset that includes scans, phone photos, rotated pages and low-quality images. Redact or appropriately protect personal information and retain an auditable process for preparing annotations.

Evaluate the complete pipeline

Measure text recognition separately from field extraction and document classification. A correct amount attached to the wrong claim or customer is still an operational failure. Include checks for document identity, field relationships and missing information.

Split evaluation data by source or time where appropriate so near-duplicate templates do not make results appear stronger than they are. Review performance by language, layout and image quality, with particular attention to rare but high-impact errors.

Connect confidence to review

Define which outputs can proceed automatically and which require staff confirmation. Preserve evidence links and provide an easy correction path. Track corrections after deployment as a signal for improvement, while keeping evaluation data independent. This is a proposed research workflow, not a statement of completed experiments or verified accuracy results.
