Camunda Technical
In-depth Camunda 8 engineering manuals: executable BPMN, DMN and FEEL, secure connectors, reliable workers, human approvals, testing and production operations. Each guide includes a practical exercise, failure cases and official documentation.

Camunda 8 — Getting Started
Choose SaaS or Self-Managed, confirm your installed version and establish a non-production workspace. Model a small BPMN process, configure execution properties, deploy and follow the instance to completion.
BPMN, DMN & FEEL
Separate orchestration from decision logic: BPMN controls work and waiting states, DMN evaluates explicit rules, and FEEL expresses conditions and mappings. Define a typed variable contract, an exclusive gateway with a default review path, and a decision table with an intentional hit policy. Test missing inputs, overlapping rules and exact threshold values; a diagram that validates can still implement the wrong business rule. The manuals below walk through an illustrative request-approval scenario.
Outbound REST Connectors
Select a REST connector template, configure the endpoint and authentication through secrets, map inputs and preserve only required response fields. Test network failures, timeouts and safe retries in a sandbox.
Inbound Webhooks & Events
Use an inbound connector to start or correlate a process from an external event. Configure supported authentication, correlation and payload mapping, and plan for duplicate events and endpoint lifecycle changes.
Job Workers, Secrets & Security
Use workers for custom service logic and connectors for supported integrations. Job activation is a lease, not an exactly-once guarantee: a worker can crash after an external action but before completion. Persist an idempotency key with the external operation, reconcile uncertain outcomes, and separate transient retries from modelled business errors. Keep credentials outside diagrams, limit fetched variables, restrict destinations and align worker concurrency with downstream capacity.
Operate, Tasklist & Troubleshooting
Follow process instances in Operate, inspect incidents and complete assigned human tasks in Tasklist. Resolve the cause of a failure before retrying; document ownership, permissions and recovery evidence.
Messages, Timers & Long-Running Processes
Design message names, correlation keys and delivery windows before connecting event senders. Test events arriving before a subscription, duplicate deliveries and late replies. Use timer boundaries deliberately: an interrupting timeout cancels the attached activity, while a non-interrupting timer creates additional work. Cancelling process work does not undo an external payment or reservation.
Human Tasks, Forms & Escalation
Separate candidate assignment from actual authorisation. Bind the correct form version, validate completion inputs, and enforce approval authority independently of editable form fields. Define claim, reassignment, deadline and escalation behaviour; test concurrent completion and revoked access. Candidate groups and due dates alone do not establish an approval policy or automatically route overdue work.
Testing & Release Engineering
Keep BPMN, DMN, forms, connector templates and worker code traceable as one release. Test decisions and worker logic independently, then exercise process paths with the testing tools supported by your Camunda version. Include a timeout after an external side effect and a recovery run. Deploy to a staging cluster before promoting the same reviewed artefacts.
SaaS, Self-Managed & Observability
Choose the operating model based on responsibility, not just hosting preference. SaaS still requires secure workers, credentials and integration monitoring; Self-Managed also requires supported infrastructure, storage, identity, upgrades and tested recovery. Monitor job age, incidents and downstream saturation, not merely whether a service is running. Backup and retention procedures must match the installed release and architecture.
Versioning, Migration & Camunda 7
Deploying a new definition does not automatically move active instances onto it. Review supported migration mappings, active elements, subscriptions, variables and worker compatibility before testing a small cohort. Moving from Camunda 7 to 8 is an architectural migration: Java delegates, expressions, transaction boundaries and history integrations require explicit redesign rather than a simple engine replacement.
